Maker Q&A: Meet Lisa of Chambre De Sucre

Lisa Kunizaki Choliy is carrying forward a centuries old Japanese tradition of gift giving with gourmet, handcrafted sugars and loose leaf teas. Her beautiful sugars add elegance to any cup of tea or coffee, and her organic, hand-blended teas all have personal stories, inspired by the places she loves. You'll find a sample of our favorite, the refreshing and detoxifying Abbot Kinney tea blend, in the January Parcel and in various gift sets.

Location: Newport Beach and NYC (living bi-coastal at the moment)

Tell us a bit about what you do.

I spread love in the world with sugar and tea. I strive to elevate the imbibing experience by selling handcrafted sugars and hand blending my own teas.

What inspired you to get started?

Who doesn't love sugar and tea?! Also, a little inspiration from my grandma never hurt.

My grandparents lived in a small city called Omuta in Fukuoka prefecture which is in Kyushu, the Southern part of Japan. It was "very country" with few fancy cafes or restaurants, so we always took entertaining to a new level at home. One of our secret ingredients for social gatherings would be these lovely jewels of sugar.

How would you define your brand’s aesthetic/philosophy?

We strive to elevate the prosaic to the gourmet, adding a touch of elegance to any occasion. We are the ultimate affordable luxury.

What's inspiring you right now?

I road trip a lot in search of inspiration. Traveling always opens my mind and heart to the impossible and unthinkable. I'm all about putting myself out there and letting the universe have its way with me.

What do you love most about your work?

All the people I get to meet through work and travel.

Do you have a product or project you’re most proud of?

All of my collaborations with Free People. They're a great bunch of people, and I've been a fan of the brand since high school. That's a long time.

What are you listening to/watching right now?

I rotate my playlist depending on my mood. Monday through Wednesday is usually MIA, Wutang, Lily Allen, FooFighters & TMBG. Thursday-Fri is reserved for Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Justin Timberlake, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Nicks, Guster, Sat-Sun is for the Pretenders, Cat Power, Beth Orton, Heather Nova, Lady Gaga, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Beatles.

Favorite quote?

"The secret of getting ahead is getting started." ~Mark Twain

"For small creatures such as we the vastness is bearable only through love." ~Carl Sagan

Any guilty pleasures?

Karaoke, donuts, anything deep fried (especially french fries), Harry Potter books (and movies), rare tea, excellent coffee, good raw cheese, sleeping in, highlighting passages in books, watching movies I wouldn't admit to having watched in public and singing in the car (loudly).

What’s your definition of an amazing gift?

Anything that comes from the heart ... or a gift that reminds one of an inside joke. Those are the best!

Maker Q&A: Meet Jessica and Allison of The Social Type

Jessica and Allison are the lovely ladies behind The Social Type. Their distinct brand of bright and cheery foil print and letterpress stationery and paper goods is lighthearted and girly but still grown up. You'll find their foil print 'Cheers' matches in the December Parcel and matches and cards throughout the Shop Gifts sets.

Location: Los Angeles, CA

Tell us a bit about what you do.

The Social Type is a paper and gift brand. We like to have a good time but don't take ourselves too seriously. We enjoy brightening someone's day with a perfect card, an exquisitely wrapped gift and a glass of bubbly. We know you like these things too, and we hope to always inspire you to be your best social self.

How did you get started?

We both have a passion for great design and paper goods. In early 2008, we started discussing our love of both things and felt there was a place for us in the stationery and gift industry to build a brand with our own twist. By 2010, we launched our first collection of foil and letterpress greeting cards. Our business and friendship continues to grow today, all while we get to create products that make us and others happy!

How would you define your brand’s aesthetic?

Fun, cheerful, functional, chic and girly!

What do you love most about your work?

Being able to create products we'd love to buy and see on the shelves ourselves. Seeing others appreciate them makes it that much more rewarding.

What are you listening to/watching right now?

Jessica: I love The Affair on Showtime, and I've been listening to The Weeknd's new album on repeat.

Allison: I'm a big fan of Scandal, and I've been really into Leon Bridges as of late.

We are both originally from Wisconsin so we watch a lot of NFL football. Go Packers!

What’s your definition of an amazing gift?

Gifts with meaning that involve some thought. I think we both agree there is still something so special about a handwritten card from someone you love.

Maker Q&A: Meet Britt of Swell Press Paper

Britt Junod of Swell Press Paper gives a modern, So Cal beach vibe to her letterpress work. (You can pretty much see the ocean while standing at her letterpress. I vouch for that and am totally jealous!) Check out her greeting cards, recipe cards and place cards in the November Parcel or in the Shop Gifts section.

Bride Alert: Swell Press also does custom invitation suites with the same modern, sophisticated aesthetic.

Name: Britt Junod

Location: Manhattan Beach, CA

Tell us a bit about what you do.

I'm a designer and letterpress printer (and pretty much everything else) for Swell Press Paper Co.

How did you get started?

I took a letterpress class on a whim a few years ago as part of a New Year's resolution to do one new thing a month (the only resolution I've ever stuck with). I immediately fell in love with the process and had that 'aha' moment, where the light shone bright and angels sang, and I realized it was what I had to do with my life. Two years of letterpress classes at OTIS (School of Art & Design) and two thousand pounds of equipment later, Swell Press began.

How would you define your brand’s aesthetic/design?

Beachy, bright… fun but sophisticated.

What's inspiring you right now?

Living by the beach inspires me. I'm sure the blues and greens of the ocean and neons of the sunset are evident in my work.

What do you love most about your work?

I love everything about it. I love getting my hands dirty. I love seeing something on a computer screen turn into a tactile thing that will be shared between people.

Do you have a product or project you’re most proud of?

I'd say most wedding invitation suites. Starting with a conversation with a bride and throwing around ideas and then turning that into something that represents the couple that they then share with their loved ones… that is pretty special.

What are you listening to/watching right now?

When I'm printing, I listen to music all day, so I can't get enough. Beach Boys, The Beatles, Beirut, Wilco, Radiohead… and the sweet sound of Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich narrating Radiolab.

Favorite quote?

"The cure for anything is salt water- sweat, tears or the sea." - Isak Dinesen

Any guilty pleasures?

Any breakfast scramble at our neighborhood brunch spot Four Daughters Kitchen. Buying expensive paper to experiment with. Wine.

What’s your definition of an amazing gift?

Everyone is so pressed for time lately, so to be given something that you know took consideration is such a beautiful thing. And if it's wrapped beautifully… then that's an amazing gift.
