Maker Q&A: Meet The Our Heiday Team

The soft, hand painted designs that define the Our Heiday style are distinctly recognizable. This small team started by Patricia Shen is based out of downtown LA and produces stationery, art prints, phone cases and more. Each Our Heiday item transforms the everyday into an experience of beauty and love. You can find Our Heiday in the May Parcel and also throughout our Shop Gifts section.

Location: Los Angeles, CA

How did the brand get started?

Patricia Shen started this adventure after leaving two years of law school at UCLA, deciding that she couldn't commit her life to an endless cycle of reading briefs or contracts. So she did what all creatively-stifled, ex-law students do and started a stationery brand.

With no formal art training, Patricia whipped together her first collection out of her downtown Los Angeles loft that she shares with her husband and pup and launched the company in June 2014. Our Heiday has since expanded to a small team based in the Arts District of Los Angeles with a line that includes stationery, art prints and gift items. We focus on doing what we do with light, love, and integrity, from the initial design to the final packaging, because our customers matter.

Patricia Shen, founder of Our Heiday

How would you define the Our Heiday aesthetic?

We like a whole lotta sophistication, sentiment, and spunk. Our products are designed to elevate the everyday, to make even the subtlest moments feel fresh and beautiful.

What do you love most about your work?

We love that every product we create is designed, produced and packaged with care and integrity. We’ve embraced the value of quality over quantity as part of our business model and it makes us so happy that every product we send out meets these standards because we really believe it makes all the difference.

Do you have a product or project you’re most proud of?

Currently, we’re really happy with our phone cases, which add such a pop of freshness to our gadgets. We spent several months going through meticulous rounds of sample runs to make sure the designs and quality were just right before making them available for purchase. We also have so many fun products we’ve been working on over the year that we’ll be releasing at NSS2016 in just a few weeks! We hope you’ll follow along with us to see all the newness :)

Any fun facts about the team?

Patricia started Our Heiday as a solo act, but quickly grew the team to four after the National Stationery Show last May. A fun fact is that we’re currently running Our Heiday from three different locations! Pat has been working from home in her last trimester of pregnancy. Donna currently lives in New York, and our production team is holding down the fort at the studio. We’re so thankful for our amazing team and the blessing of technology!

What’s your definition of an amazing gift?

We think the best gifts should make the recipient feel loved and appreciated. We love giving simple but high-quality things like hand-poured candles, a fragrant bag of coffee beans from small roasters or a great skin care product - functional gifts that also feel a little indulgent.

Maker Q&A: Meet Tiffany of Shifting Status Kuo

Tiffany Kuo of Shifting Status Kuo lends her own cheerful, warm personality to her line of screen printed greeting cards and gifts. Based in Southern California, her designs are bright, hand illustrated and full of love. You'll find her Red String love card included in the February Parcel.

Name: Tiffany Kuo

Location: Launched in windy Chicago, now based in sunny Southern California.

Tell us a bit about what you do.

I design and screen print cards and gifts for Shifting Status Kuo. Every design begins as my hand-drawn illustration and is then exposed onto a screen to create a stencil. Each layer of ink is then pushed through the mesh (often by hand with a squeegee) to leave a rich coat of color. Depending on my workload, I also work with clients to conceptualize and print custom projects like wedding invitations and premium event favors.

How did you get started?

I've always loved drawing, crafting, and making cards ever since I was little. During my college years at School of the Art Institute of Chicago, I fell in love with printmaking. Instead of pursuing a gallery artist career, I decided to combine my two passions of screen printing and greeting cards to share my creations.

How would you define your brand’s aesthetic?

Lighthearted, colorful and endearing with a distinct hand-drawn quality.

What's inspiring you right now?

English wasn't my first language, so I'm always fascinated and inspired by puns. Everyday objects in my life inspire me. So in a way, most of my designs are like a combination of word play and still life illustrations.

What do you love most about your work?

I love seeing people chuckle or say "awww" when they look see my products. It's so satisfying when they choose my cards or gifts to send to someone special. There's also a sense of pride when I see my products on the shelves of retail stores. It's like all the hard work has finally led to that moment when one of my products goes to a new happy home!

Do you have a product you’re most proud of?

I'm most proud of my pillowcase design that says "I love FALLING ASLEEP next to you" & "I love WAKING UP next to you".

The design was inspired by my long distance relationship, and I'm delighted that so many couples appreciate the comfort of each other's company. When I sell them at local shows, I get to see the affectionate reactions from couples of all ages and orientation. I know this sounds cheesy but it makes me really happy when I see my work result in extra hugs and kisses in the world!

What are you listening to/watching right now?

I really enjoy listening to podcasts while I'm working on the computer or while I'm sketching. My current favorites are "Stuff You Should Know" and "99% Invisible". Both surprise me in the topics they cover and make me wonder more about how things work in our world.

Ok, I'll fess up... I often blast Taylor Swift, Katy Perry and P!nk while I'm screen printing in the studio. It's like my own little dance party!

Favorite quote?

"Don't compare your beginning to someone else's middle" - John Acuff

Any guilty pleasures?

Yes! I am such a Netflix junkie... I think I've lost weeks of my life from binging on shows! Sometimes I'll screen print or assemble cards while watching an episode but that's not always the case. Besides that, I love a cute gel manicure because they hold up so well even when I bang my nails up in the studio.

What’s your definition of an amazing gift?

An amazing gift is thoughtful and reflects the relationship between the giver and recipient. I always love it when people share the reason why they chose a certain gift for someone. It can be anything from "this is her favorite color" to "this reminds me of our first camping trip".

Maker Q&A: Meet Lisa of Chambre De Sucre

Lisa Kunizaki Choliy is carrying forward a centuries old Japanese tradition of gift giving with gourmet, handcrafted sugars and loose leaf teas. Her beautiful sugars add elegance to any cup of tea or coffee, and her organic, hand-blended teas all have personal stories, inspired by the places she loves. You'll find a sample of our favorite, the refreshing and detoxifying Abbot Kinney tea blend, in the January Parcel and in various gift sets.

Location: Newport Beach and NYC (living bi-coastal at the moment)

Tell us a bit about what you do.

I spread love in the world with sugar and tea. I strive to elevate the imbibing experience by selling handcrafted sugars and hand blending my own teas.

What inspired you to get started?

Who doesn't love sugar and tea?! Also, a little inspiration from my grandma never hurt.

My grandparents lived in a small city called Omuta in Fukuoka prefecture which is in Kyushu, the Southern part of Japan. It was "very country" with few fancy cafes or restaurants, so we always took entertaining to a new level at home. One of our secret ingredients for social gatherings would be these lovely jewels of sugar.

How would you define your brand’s aesthetic/philosophy?

We strive to elevate the prosaic to the gourmet, adding a touch of elegance to any occasion. We are the ultimate affordable luxury.

What's inspiring you right now?

I road trip a lot in search of inspiration. Traveling always opens my mind and heart to the impossible and unthinkable. I'm all about putting myself out there and letting the universe have its way with me.

What do you love most about your work?

All the people I get to meet through work and travel.

Do you have a product or project you’re most proud of?

All of my collaborations with Free People. They're a great bunch of people, and I've been a fan of the brand since high school. That's a long time.

What are you listening to/watching right now?

I rotate my playlist depending on my mood. Monday through Wednesday is usually MIA, Wutang, Lily Allen, FooFighters & TMBG. Thursday-Fri is reserved for Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Justin Timberlake, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Nicks, Guster, Sat-Sun is for the Pretenders, Cat Power, Beth Orton, Heather Nova, Lady Gaga, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Beatles.

Favorite quote?

"The secret of getting ahead is getting started." ~Mark Twain

"For small creatures such as we the vastness is bearable only through love." ~Carl Sagan

Any guilty pleasures?

Karaoke, donuts, anything deep fried (especially french fries), Harry Potter books (and movies), rare tea, excellent coffee, good raw cheese, sleeping in, highlighting passages in books, watching movies I wouldn't admit to having watched in public and singing in the car (loudly).

What’s your definition of an amazing gift?

Anything that comes from the heart ... or a gift that reminds one of an inside joke. Those are the best!

Maker Q&A: Meet Jessica and Allison of The Social Type

Jessica and Allison are the lovely ladies behind The Social Type. Their distinct brand of bright and cheery foil print and letterpress stationery and paper goods is lighthearted and girly but still grown up. You'll find their foil print 'Cheers' matches in the December Parcel and matches and cards throughout the Shop Gifts sets.

Location: Los Angeles, CA

Tell us a bit about what you do.

The Social Type is a paper and gift brand. We like to have a good time but don't take ourselves too seriously. We enjoy brightening someone's day with a perfect card, an exquisitely wrapped gift and a glass of bubbly. We know you like these things too, and we hope to always inspire you to be your best social self.

How did you get started?

We both have a passion for great design and paper goods. In early 2008, we started discussing our love of both things and felt there was a place for us in the stationery and gift industry to build a brand with our own twist. By 2010, we launched our first collection of foil and letterpress greeting cards. Our business and friendship continues to grow today, all while we get to create products that make us and others happy!

How would you define your brand’s aesthetic?

Fun, cheerful, functional, chic and girly!

What do you love most about your work?

Being able to create products we'd love to buy and see on the shelves ourselves. Seeing others appreciate them makes it that much more rewarding.

What are you listening to/watching right now?

Jessica: I love The Affair on Showtime, and I've been listening to The Weeknd's new album on repeat.

Allison: I'm a big fan of Scandal, and I've been really into Leon Bridges as of late.

We are both originally from Wisconsin so we watch a lot of NFL football. Go Packers!

What’s your definition of an amazing gift?

Gifts with meaning that involve some thought. I think we both agree there is still something so special about a handwritten card from someone you love.

Maker Q&A: Meet Britt of Swell Press Paper

Britt Junod of Swell Press Paper gives a modern, So Cal beach vibe to her letterpress work. (You can pretty much see the ocean while standing at her letterpress. I vouch for that and am totally jealous!) Check out her greeting cards, recipe cards and place cards in the November Parcel or in the Shop Gifts section.

Bride Alert: Swell Press also does custom invitation suites with the same modern, sophisticated aesthetic.

Name: Britt Junod

Location: Manhattan Beach, CA

Tell us a bit about what you do.

I'm a designer and letterpress printer (and pretty much everything else) for Swell Press Paper Co.

How did you get started?

I took a letterpress class on a whim a few years ago as part of a New Year's resolution to do one new thing a month (the only resolution I've ever stuck with). I immediately fell in love with the process and had that 'aha' moment, where the light shone bright and angels sang, and I realized it was what I had to do with my life. Two years of letterpress classes at OTIS (School of Art & Design) and two thousand pounds of equipment later, Swell Press began.

How would you define your brand’s aesthetic/design?

Beachy, bright… fun but sophisticated.

What's inspiring you right now?

Living by the beach inspires me. I'm sure the blues and greens of the ocean and neons of the sunset are evident in my work.

What do you love most about your work?

I love everything about it. I love getting my hands dirty. I love seeing something on a computer screen turn into a tactile thing that will be shared between people.

Do you have a product or project you’re most proud of?

I'd say most wedding invitation suites. Starting with a conversation with a bride and throwing around ideas and then turning that into something that represents the couple that they then share with their loved ones… that is pretty special.

What are you listening to/watching right now?

When I'm printing, I listen to music all day, so I can't get enough. Beach Boys, The Beatles, Beirut, Wilco, Radiohead… and the sweet sound of Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich narrating Radiolab.

Favorite quote?

"The cure for anything is salt water- sweat, tears or the sea." - Isak Dinesen

Any guilty pleasures?

Any breakfast scramble at our neighborhood brunch spot Four Daughters Kitchen. Buying expensive paper to experiment with. Wine.

What’s your definition of an amazing gift?

Everyone is so pressed for time lately, so to be given something that you know took consideration is such a beautiful thing. And if it's wrapped beautifully… then that's an amazing gift.

Maker Q&A: Meet Brianna of Little Arrow

This is the first in a series of chats with the uber talented and passionate ladies behind the brands you'll find at Paper By Parcel. Brianna of Little Arrow has a fun, playful edge that she brings to all of her design. You'll find her greeting cards, lapel pins and balloons in a few of the gift sets currently available in our Shop Gifts section.

Brianna Bulski

Location: Eugene, Oregon

Tell us a bit about what you do.

I am an illustrator & designer for my stationery & gift business Little Arrow.

How did you get started?

I am a self taught graphic designer and I did not go to college. I cut my teeth in the stationery industry sorta by chance. I was 21 and had no idea what I wanted to do for a living. I had planned to get a degree in Graphic Design and was taking the beginners classes but realized school wasn't for me, so I quit college and instead searched for jobs. I was hired at a local greeting card company to package product, ship orders and answer the phones. One of the owners illustrated all the art for their cards, and I expressed an interest in learning from her. Over the years I worked my way up to Graphic Designer, and then when she retired I took her place as Art Director.

How would you define your brand’s aesthetic/design?

Energetic, playful, optimistic, weird.

What's inspiring you right now?

Right now I'm in love with anything from my childhood or from my angsty teenage years. The 90's are back in full force - and it makes me so happy! Give me anything iridescent and shiny. I'm also obsessed with patches and pins at the moment.

What do you love most about your work?

I love it when something I've made makes someone smile and laugh. It's such a great feeling!

Do you have a product or project you’re most proud of?

I'm really proud of my Telephone Lapel Pin! The idea came to me in a dream.

What are you listening to/watching right now?

Lately I've been revisiting the entire Nirvana catalog. I'm also really loving Alex Winston, she's amazing.

Favorite quote?

"Comparison is the thief of joy" - Theodore Roosevelt

Any guilty pleasures?

Food. Specifically, burgers, ice cream and tacos.

What’s your definition of an amazing gift?

I love it when someone puts real thought into a gift - they know what the recipient wants or needs and picks something that will speak to them. Heartfelt gifts are always the best and will make a lasting impression.
